Day 6 – GDT – Tornado Avalanche Bypass

It seemed like a good idea. ~Asher, my grandson

July 11

Above Alexander Creek to below Avalanche Saddle – 20 miles

I am beat.

Today was a lot of elevation gain and loss, which was good. But the end of the day was another story.

At Tornado Pass area the trail is very dangerous from an avalanche. The Great Divide Trail Association has created an alternate around that is a little on ATV road and mostly on game trails. It is about 4 miles long. We got to the alternate at about 4:30 and decided to go for it.

It took us a lot longer to get through the forest and we were pooped out. We scouted out for a campsite, but most of the flatter spots we’re filled with some kind of animal scat, so we moved on.

Finally, we are at a lovely spot about a 1/2 a mile from the top of Tornado Saddle. Thank you GDTA and Canadoug for the easy to follow reroute.
