Day 15 AZT – Superstition

“That is what life is about I guess, being miserable, and then enjoy it, being miserable, and then enjoy it.”

~movie “The Outbound”

March 19

Mile 310.2 to mile 332.5

22.3 miles very hard earned miles, 5,000 feet up and 4,800 down

This is my very least favorite day. The trail passed through the Superstition Wilderness Area. It was mostly through burn area with a rocky, steep trail. Lots and lots of straight ups and downs. The water sources are spread apart, so that didn’t help much.

I am camped on another ridge at the top of a big climb. Tomorrow I am resupplying at Roosevelt Lake Marina. I need a shower and that is not going to happen tomorrow. Apparently I need an attitude adjustment. I have not seen a thru- hiker in a couple of days. I know lots of people are out here. I am just in between the bubble.

  1. My theory about that stretch is that the trails are old mining trails that the prospectors would mercilessly whip their burros up and down. Only now you are the burro.
Unfortunately the Matzatzals ahead are more of the same. Hang in there and treat yourself to a nero-zero in Pine. It is an awesome trail town and you will deserve it. Check That Brewery to see if their cabin is available, it is a sweet setup.
    Good Luck!

  2. Hi Rockin’!

I agree with Steve. “I know who your GPS is, Miss Rockin’. “.

There is beauty even in a burn area. I love the photo of the large tree trunk. Also, great to see new growth in the burned trees. You’ll get your shower soon! Enjoy every step.

I’m sure there are days that are “down” days but you always see the bright side of hiking. So I say, Onward, the best is yet to come. I always enjoy your photos of where you are. They are always very interesing and beautiful. Looking forward to your photos tomorrow.

We’ve been “together” long enough by way of words that I think I have a realistic sense of your present mental challenge, and just want offer my rusty trusty attitude adjusting wrench to you. You know you have had worse, and there indeed is a hot shower in your future, for one thing. I know who your GPS is, Miss Rockin’. Thanks for toting me along with you.

  6. I lived neared the Superstition mountains for a few years and enjoyed a few short hikes in them. It is difficult to imagine the harsh challenge of backpacking through them. Most people think that March is a month of mild weather, but in the lower elevations of southern Arizona, the heat is already a huge factor. To avoid the heat there and in southern New Mexico, I used to try to start hikes at first light and be done before noon. People engaged in construction and farming often start before sunrise to escape the heat of the day.
You have earned my admiration for your tenacity on this and many other of your adventures.
Thank you for sharing your excursions.
