Day 4 TST Part 2 – Rain with a Mix of Hail, Thunder and Lightening

“There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” – Sir Rannulph Fiennes

October 2

Just past Fall Creek to Helms Meadow Junction at Courtright Reservoir – 14 miles

It started raining this morning at 5:30 am and did not stop until 3:00 pm, except for a brief mid-day break.

Both Arrow and I agreed that this was the most rain we have experienced on trail. It simply down-poured the entire day with some hail and thunder and lightening sprinkled in. The driving rain made a crazy amount of water on the trail, pouring down the trail sometimes creating small pools, little waterfalls, and small streams.

Our hiking umbrellas really helped a ton to keep us from being totally soaked. I also really thought my DIY hiking skirt made from a trash compactor bag kept my lower body dry and warmer.

Luckily, hiking today was on clear trail through healthy forest with no higher elevation pass to cross, I am sure we would have been walking through snow.

After the rain stopped in the late afternoon, temps dropped and we both got chilled and decided to quit for the day. It was a smart decision.

Tomorrow, we have 15.5 miles to the Badger Flat Trailhead and hitching from there to Huntington Lake for a warm bed and resupply.

  1. That rain skirt is kinda sexy! har……………….. And quite smart. No real $$ outlay and easy enough to make on the fly.

Waiting out the cloudburst is an excellent photo; really shows just how much of a downpour it was.

    Stay safe and warm.

  2. Umbrellas are awesome… Rain or shine 🙂

Mu husband and friends used to go fishing at Courtright Lake several years when we lived in Clovis. He said every afternoon around 3:00 a storm would come in. Don’t get too cold!
