Day 7 – GDT – Saddle Show

To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment. ~Jane Austen

July 12

Below Tornado Saddle to Beehive Creek – 16.7.

First up the climb over Tornado Pass was straight up on loose talus. Rock mountains dominate this area.

Best treat ever… just over the top of the saddle, herds of mountain sheep were hanging out. Why Not and I sat and just enjoyed the show.

Today’s trek was mostly on trail, which was super nice. It is fun to see all the different animal scat along the way.

  1. Seems as though your blog often leads off with an amazing landscape, certainly the case today.

I’ll be interested to see how you climb up out of the Beehive.

  2. Climbing that saddle looks exhausting. So cool to see the sheep though. Well done!

  3. Bighorn sheep are smooth-haired brown with white rumps and curly horns. Rocky mountain goats are covered with heavy shaggy white hair and have short straight spike horns and look like muscled up weight-lifters. Both inhabit high mountain areas. Mountain goats have killed people in rare instances and should never be approached.

Thank you. So from your description they would be Bighorn Sheep??? We definitely stayed far away and gave them space. There were maybe 50: mamas, babies, and a couple males.
