Hey I have a NEW grandson!

Baby Hyland Reid joined our family and we couldn’t be more excited. Bryn, Chris, Sawyer and baby are all doing great.

This short and fast birth story will go down in the books. Baby was born swift and furious on the side of the freeway on the way to the hospital. Luckily, Chris was a quarterback in high school for the big catch. And I know what you are thinking. No they didn’t wait too long. It just happened quickly.

Man, I am still wrapping my head around the whole thing.

Photos and video dump are from Hyland’s first days home.

Some of you just might notice Sawyer’s BIG accident on his face. He had a meeting with a pile of granite rocks the day before Hyland’s birth. No, it didn’t happen on my watch.

Speaking of Sawyer. He was actually speechless for a few minutes when he first met his new sibling. Pretty funny and so so sweet.

Happy happy LOVE DAY everyone! Back in the day when I taught elementary school, Valentine’s Day was my favorite holiday in the classroom. It was a full-on extravaganza focusing on kindness, giving, and friendship.  
❤️We read books on character building, overcoming hardship, and feel-good topics
❤️Wrote poems
❤️Performed skits
❤️Made handmade cards and wrote/illustated little books for family and friends
❤️Learned about the history of Valentine’s Day
❤️Drew and cut out hearts to study symmetry
❤️Ate a healthy treat or two

It was fabulous. Many of these traditions have filtered into my own children’s lives and how they currently honor this day.

I am lucky to be married to a good man. I would like to honor him today. Here are a few ways he makes me feel loved and important. He always gets most excited about what we can do together. He always makes me feel like his favorite place in the world is next to me. He pushes me to try new and scary things. He never makes me feel slow and always cheers me on. 👏🏻

❄️❄️ IT FINALLY SNOWED at home with enough coverage to get Sawyer out for his first day on REAL skis (with metal edges).🎿 It was a morning I will never forget.

@dbrosander and I were prepared for maybe a couple of runs and thought he would say, “All done” BUT to our surprise it was the opposite. He not only did he squeal with joy over and over, he said “Not all done” and “Do it myself” many times, and weirdly he hummed A LOT. We had to make him quit for lunch and nap 💤 time!

Two year old Sawyer’s progression from the beginning of the morning to lunch was a performance of grit, courage, and keen strategy. I couldn’t be prouder. Pretty cool what can be accomplished on just a couple of inches of fresh snow. “Get it until it is gone.”

Next week…watch out Discovery Lift @mammothmountain, Sawyer (The Skier Who Skis) is coming for ya.

WAY WAY WAY back in 2010 I started a blog and named it ladyonarock.com. I named the website after a solo lady hiker I met that was sitting on a rock just below Muir Pass in the high Sierra in 2009. After visiting with her for a short while, I was INSPIRED to start hiking the Pacific Crest Trail a section at a time as a solo hiker.

Over the years I have posted 702 blog posts about hiking!!!!! That seems just crazy to me. I had to check that number twice.

It has been a number of years since I have posted regularly. I decided it was about time to give ladyonarock.com a BIG refresh and start posting once again. I missed my community and needed to get back at it.

After a lot of sitting, hours of frustration, learning how to work on the site again, and lots of updating old content, a NEW trip report is up on the blog.

The first one is from last September on the Great Western Divide climbing Mount Brewer and South Guard Peak. The on and off trail route was challenging, wild, and beautiful. You can find the post linked in my bio.

Welcome back Lady on a Rock. I missed you. ❤️

This genius inspiration comes straight from @brite_creek_farm to build a small natural “Play Park” in our backyard. The farm has a variety of climbing, sitting, and areas that invite make believe play. I was hooked after our fall visit.

What I hadn’t anticipated was the role 2 year old Sawyer would take on. Thanks @dbrosander for setting up the perfect environment for a toddler to work, create, and reap quick rewards with the addition of lots of heavy breathing. Be sure to turn the sound up.

I have a feeling that this little park will morph and grow over the next few years many times over.

Opening day at ski resorts often are not about sending that perfect line, but about the celebration of the sport and honoring the hard work that goes into making a ski resort safe and fun.

With a crazy wild weather report @dbrosander and I went into today’s opening @junemountain with very low expectations just wanting to be part of one of our favorite resort’s festivities.

After taking a couple of runs in high winds and white out conditions, we called it and headed to the lodge. I wish I had a better report on how we handled “hanging out” until the toast to open the 24/25 season. Let’s just say we need to work on the skill of sitting around.

What was so cool and super motivating was observing and listening to the entire room. The air was electric with smiles, good vibes, joy, laughter and community.

Cheers to a very snowy upcoming ski season. I am looking forward to riding this mountain many times in 24/25. Looking at you J7!!!!

Man oh man @mammothmountain delivered today. ❄️

Started out the morning thinking, “No way am I heading out into that blizzard.” After a bit, the call of the mountain won.

Out the gate the swish of my skis sliding and floating through pockets of fresh powder reminded me why I come back time after time. Peace filled my soul.

I do have to admit though that I was also filled with thankfulness for my heated gloves, toe warmers, quality ski kit and awesome skis. 😍🙏 🎿

As the day progressed @dbrosander and I refilled with coffee and fuel and continued to enjoy fresh refills of snow with every run.

It was pretty sweet and a keeper. You know one of the good memories that hopefully won’t disappear.

Gotta also add that this season ALL the staff at the mountain have been fun, engaging, kind, and SO positive. Pretty motivating when you hit the end of a challenging run to get up and do it again.

I’m excited to announce I will be returning for my 6th season with the @andrewskurka backcountry guiding team. The 2025 trip schedule is now live. Open application period starts on December 9. For a peak at iteration 1 of the Trip Schedule, visit https://andrewskurka.com/guided-trips/2025-trip-schedule-availability Our season will start in April just as spring arrives in the Escalante canyons of southern Utah. It will end with peak fall colors in West Virginia. In between, we’re returning to the Brooks Range, High Sierra, and Greater Yellowstone. New for 2025 are trips exclusively for: • 55+ years-old, and • All-women In addition, there are six Signature Series trips. Normally, routes are assembled that are appropriate for the group. With these trips, a group will be assembled that is appropriate for the route. So fun to celebrate the opening of the brand new Broadway Express (1) with a ribbon cutting ceremony @mammothmountain . 🎉 The stoke was high and @dbrosander and I loved the new lift. It was efficient, fast, and comfy with an easy entrance and exit. Lapping Broadway with the new lift was crazy swift on soft groomers. I don’t try to hide that I love new gear that works. My newest skis and kit I am super happy with. Skis like to turn and my kit is warm with great features. Latest storm is coming in fast and furious.
