Bus, train, train, trolley, car, walk
That is what happened over the last 24 hours to start walking on the Pacific Crest Trail north of Crater Lake, Oregon.
Most everything went smoothly transportation wise until the trolley pulled out of the station in Klamath Falls and had engine trouble. But because of that, great things happened. A car from the trolley service picked us up and because it was so late they offered to drive me right to the exact location I got off the PCT 2 years ago. The best.
I started walking about 2:00 in the afternoon today. The day was beautiful, clear, and cool. This is such a contrast to when I was here 2 years ago. Then it was foggy, lightly snowing, and snow-covered the ground…everywhere.
The highlights today were: Mount Thielsen’s majesty, the smooth gentle trail, hiking at lower altitude (so much easier and without a bear canister), and passing the highest point of the PCT in Oregon and Washington. I didn’t see a single hiker today, but am expecting to meet a few PCTers soon.

I did the OST from Shelter Cove to Crescent Lake as a day hike since we were staying at Odell for a long weekend. I’ll be doing the official trail on my sobo section hike from Shelter Cove to Fish Lake in 3 weeks (fires permitting). I’m looking forward to getting closer to Diamond Peak. In my sobo hiker-trail-magic tradition I carried cans of Mtn Dew and Coke in my pack with a bag of ice poured over the top of it to give to any nobos I might meet…alas I met none, so we had ice-cold pop all along the trail. It was good “training weight” for my upcoming hike none the less! 🙂

Okay that is just plain hard-core! Heavy. I wish I would have taken the Diamond Lake route. Although the sunrise and sunset from Diamond View Lake was a monumental experience.

I can imagine how wonderfully fragrant that is! Are you using a SPOT?
I have never used a Spot. Thought about it many times. I know on a section hike like this it would have been helpful for others to know where and when to meet me on the trail.
