I am reeling with all the feels from snowy opening day weekend @mammothmountain . Unexpected fresh powder, the feeling of skis sliding on snow, the positive professional vibe of the mountain staff, meeting new friends and just being surrounded by happy humans was just the very best.

Even better @dbrosander and I won the new #mammothbeanie for being one of the 1st 100 in line on opening day morning. Huge thank you Mammoth Mountain. 👏🏻👏🏻

Sawyer is doing great adding on additional equipment each very short time we have fun on the skis. Today we worked on riding a chair lift and flexing his knees. If you look VERY carefully he bends both his knees and does a little pop. ⛷️

SWEATER WEATHER! 🍂

Sawyer continues to challenge and teach us about bravery and resilience. 💪 Guess what? It is great to do the hard things on your own, but sometimes at a crux, it is okay to embrace help.

In just a couple of days Sawyer will be TWO. He continues to call @dbrosander , Bop Bop and Ritty seems to be sticking for my name. His go to word when he doesn’t know something is still “THIS”. I hope he never stops.

Energy abounds from every cell of his little body. How he can talk and do all things at the same time, it is a mystery. Sawyer can have toddler conversions at the dinner table with 4 and 5 word sentences reflecting on people and his day.

Snow ski season is right around the corner for this little guy. 🎿🏔️❄️

Fall fun with wild abandon at @brite_creek_farm Pumpkin Patch Festivities today. 🍂

What a cool experience visiting Jay and Hannah Shipman’s Tehachapi regenerative farm. They raise pastured-grass fed beef, chicken, turkey, eggs, vegetables, and so much more. We bought some goodies and came away with a future wish list. 🐄

Sawyer’s favorites: the tractor, running, and dirt. 🚜🎃🏃‍♂️ He was not much into a photo shoot today. 📷

Just a walk in the park. A colorful one I might add. Our final day was spent walking downhill all on-trail.

The vibrant color of sky, leaves and water was almost a sensory overload in a most fantastic way.

This is the kind of trip that feels like one has been in the mountains at least a couple of weeks. But in reality a mere few days.

Creating this type of backpack (route) where the miles are not what you count but rather the day is counted in passes, creeks, peaks, basins, valleys, and talus fields. The online program Cal Topo and my older guidebooks has contributed to more successful trips than I can count. This summer especially.

I am not quite ready for backpack season to end. I still have a couple trips I would like to fit in, but it seems that fall has now hit hard and swift across the western states.

This summer I managed to climb 29 new to me peaks and slept on the ground backpacking 50 nights. I am already planning and dreaming of next year’s climbs, backpacks and just maybe a whole new sport in the mountains. Who knows?

With a name like Cloudripper, who wouldn’t want to sit atop that peak. Not only is it the highest peak of the Inconsolable Range, but it is one of California’s fabled 13ers. It did not disappoint and we combined it easily with fellow 13er Vagabond Peak.

My day didn’t start out so great. I ended up stupidly hitting an overhanging rock picking up my pack after a little down climb and split my head open. Michelle quickly patched me up with steri-strips and we went on with our day.

After making our way from Fifth Lake to Seventh Lake, we stored gear at Seventh Lake. The first objective, the saddle, was not fun. It was loose and steep. Best part…eating lunch at the top. The rest of the climb up to the summit of Cloudripper was quite fun.

After a quick descent, we made our way to Vagabond Peak. So open, easy, and quick. By choice I headed up a line that had lots of little class 3 moves. The handholds on Vagabond’s rocks are formed like jugs at an inside climbing gym. Very unique.

@michellebeiswenger and I made it back to camp at Seventh Lake just as the sun set on the horizon. A few glitches, but one fine day.

Day 3 - 1st tarn below Jigsaw Pass > Fifth Lake > Seventh Lake > Cloudripper Peak > Vagabond Peak > Seventh Lake

LOWS & HIGHS
👎Felt clumsy in the morning, like my legs were not obeying what my head was directing
👎Hit my upper forehead on a rock that resulted in an open gash
🌟Michelle, with her mad nursing skills, steri-stripped the cut together
👎Hiking up steep loose talus on the approach saddle to Cloudripper
🌟Getting to the summit of Cloudripper, views? AMAAAAAZING!
🌟Fun class 3 climb up Vagabond Peak. Lots of great handholds.
🌟Beautiful sunset light on Seventh Lake
👎Headache at the end of the day. I had trouble with basic tasks.
