I want to dance the tango with chance and I want to ride on the wind, because nothing gets done with dust in your gun and nobody respects a liar, so good-bye for a while and off to explore every boundary and every door…ya I’m going North.

We did the JMT in July of 2010 and there was so much snow it was had to find the trial at times. We traversed about 2 miles of snow fields on the way up to Muir Pass. Your video sure brought back some great memories. You sounded like you really enjoyed the journey! Thanks for stopping by our blog and I will enjoy watching yours. bill
Welcome Bill! I found your site through Janet at Califraven. You guys are amazing. I sure can relate with all the snow. My husband, son, and I hiked the Sierras early June of 2011, the record snow year from Kearsage Pass to Reds Meadow. It was intense and an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. The stream crossings especially took all the courage I had. The snow fields on Muir Pass felt like Antarctica, the sun’s radiating rays burnt the inside of our lips and nose. Where was that white zinc oxide when we needed it? I am looking forward to your upcoming photography and trips.
I noticed someone mentioned the book Wild. I just finished reading it and really enjoyed the story and experience.
It is very interesting that people either loved the book or heavily disliked it. Thanks for your input.
Thanks for sharing this, Rockin…Pyrite and I are doing a cross-country trip into Kaweah Basin and are planning on climbing Whitney next week. Made me excited to see this!
Chinchilla!!!!!
All without snow!!! It is hard to believe. After hiking the Sierras last summer in the snow, I began think of them as snow bound ALL the time. It was great to go back and not be in fear of my life most of the day.
Kaweah Basin and the surrounding area is beautiful, rugged, and remote. I did a loop cross-country trip a couple years ago into the basin over Pants Pass. Here is blog from that trip:

Hope your adventure is fun and safe!
I read that write up of your trip when planning:) Columbine Lake is one of my favorite campsites, ever. I love it up there. I think we are going to go timber gap/ Black Rock Pass to Kaweah Gap to get into the basin. Otherwise we might do Sawtooth Pass again, just to get up to Columbine Lake. I’m not really sure. We’re hoping to get a chance to climb Whitney in there too, but we don’t have a set plan, just getting out there to get out there. I just want to spend some time in that basin more than anything;) Anyway, keep up on your trips and reports, I love living vicariously through them.

Wishing you safe exploration. The Kaweah Mountains are wild and rare formations. Have a blast!
Just got back from Whitney (the easy way from the Portal). Now wanting to do JMT. Loved your video.
Hello Kyle,
Thank you! Yes do it! During the entire trip I kept thinking…when can I come back? It is that good.
I am heading up this weekend to climb Whitney (again) in a 3 day backpack. I am hoping to climb Muir also on the way. What else is there to do. Right? Thanks for stopping by!
Fantastic, enjoy!
That’s a great video, I didn’t want it to end. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
Didn’t want it to end…Boy that sums up my whole trip. I DIDN’T WANT IT TO END! I have backpacked for years and this was probably my favorite of all time, except that I missed you on the trail by a day! Hopefully next time. Happy hiking!
Hi Rockin… I’m a long time reader of your blog but this is my first time commenting! I just wanted to say “thank you” for all your posts and for this video of your JMT trek. I am heading out a week from Tuesday and it will be my first long distance hike (did 60 miles of it last year and then decided I had to go back and finish it…), so it was really cool to follow your journey!
Ahhhh thank you and so glad that you commented! I am so excited that you will be on the trail. I will be on the JMT AGAIN to hike with Wired, a 2011 PCTer, from Kearsage Pass to Whitney Portal Labor Day weekend. I just might see you on the trail. Hope your trip is safe and fun! Great to hear from you.
Another quote from another great song. I did a bike ride to commemorate my start date on the PCT a few months ago. Going North was the first song that randomly played on my MP3 and I looped it most of the ride! Great video! I still can’t believe you can put all that together with an app!
Nothing get done with dust in your gun. Boy that should be your motto! Nothing grows under your feet that is for sure.
Yes sireeeee all with an app and it is fun to boot. Deal. See you just in a few days… on the trail…YAYYYYYYY
Thank you for sharing such beautiful pictures…so happy to have met you in Tuolumne…you rock!
I loved talking with you, especially about your life in Yosemite. It was great fun also hearing your take on the book “Wild” and loved sharing about solo adventures and road trips. Thanks for a motivating afternoon.
