Family Camping

A visit from grandparents would not be complete without an overnight camp-out. Right.?
~Rockin’

An hour outside Boise, Idaho in Bogus Basin Recreational Area is a sweet little campground near Shafer Butte. A near perfect spot to take young children. Equipped with fixings for smores (our version with Nutella), a 3 man 12 pound tent we used backpacking when our kids were little, jammies, sleeping bags, and stuffed animals, we headed out for kid’s night out in the mountains.

The happy campers had fun setting up camp, gathering wood for the campfire, jumping and playing on rocks, learning about pit potties, using quiet voices as to not disturb wildlife and other campers, exploring the various techniques of roasting marshmallows or not, and focusing on basic safety around the campfire, like don’t swing around a stick that is on fire.

While discussing trail names and what they were during our evening walk, we all agreed that my grand-daughter’s perfect trail name would be “Nutella”. She will do most anything for the stuff, and she is the master at spreading it perfectly on a graham cracker before the roasted marshmallow hits the cracker. She is super excited about her new name and kept thanking me for taking her camping. So what else could I do but promise to take her backpacking when she is 6. Look out for next summer’s blog entry, “Nutella and Rockin’ Hit the Trail”!
It doesn’t get better than this.

Wow that was strange. I just wrote an very long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyway, just wanted to say wonderful blog!

  2. LOVE IT!!! Was your camera on a unique setting? I really like the lighting to the pictures. It seems different.

    • Yep! Compliments of Airstash that enabled the transfer of photos from my Lumix LX5 to my iPhone, then edited in my iPhone iPhoto app. I used the Vintage filter. Fun stuff. Thanks for noticing.

      • So are you converted to the Airstash? It would be so great to only take pictures with my camera. Now I’m gonna have to get one aren’t I?

        • BIG YES! I am leaving tomorrow afternoon to hike from Cottonwood Pass to Happy Isle and am planning on using just my camera. Should be a lot simpler, save time, and less stressful. Plus, I should be able to post better quality photos. I realize this section does not have cell service, but I am going to pretend it does and post when I get to Reds. They have WiFi now. Or if I have service at the top of Whitney or at VVR. Who knows? Airstash Rocks. I will let you know how all the battery stuff works. Testing. Testing. Testing.

          • Is that Happy Isles in Yosemite that you’re hiking to? I’m not sure where Cottonwood Pass is, but there is a Happy Isles in Yosemite.

  3. This is the best! They’ll be following in your footsteps:)

    • Margo!
It is so fun sharing our lives with our grandchildren. Thank you for posting and hope you are spending time with precious ones as well.

  4. Oh my, what a great night. I can just feel the excitement in those kids. I am so pleased that you all had that opportunity. Fun, fun, fun. Yum, yum.

  5. I LOVE this post. 🙂 It brings back so many memories of taking my kids camping when they were young, espcially not swinging a burning stick around. Thank you for sharing your family.

    • You are welcome. Those pesky hot sticks are such a problem! You are so right. And all the other special little things like don’t run and jump around the fire, when smoke is in your eyes move, don’t throw stuff into the fire, and don’t pour water on the fire until the fire needs putting out. All the fun things!
