Sometimes things are not meant to be.
Last night Arrow was in a lot of pain with a toothache. It came on suddenly and did not get better. By morning the gum was very swollen. We spent the day trying to figure out what to do. Toothaches can be very serious. Luckily, Arrow carries antibiotics, started taking them and the workers at the resort helped with some local pain relievers. She is one tough lady.
The weather continues to be cold and snow is predicted on the higher passes ahead. With 67 miles to go to the finish, it would be super irresponsible to go into the backcountry anything less than 100 percent.
Generously, Arrow’s son is picking us up to retrieve our cars.
Here’s to quick healing, a safe adventure, The Theodore Solomons Trail, and to good friends.
Thanks all for the well wishes regarding my tooth! Unfortunately, I have to have a root canal. Ugh.
Hopefully Rockin can get out before the snow flies and complete this darn trail! 67 more miles.
Sorry you had to abort the rest of your journey but I shiver just thinking about getting caught in a snow storm. Hope Sally’s tooth ache goes away without a visit to the dentist (my most unfavorite thing!!). Will be waiting for your next adventure!!
Sorry about Sally’s toothache. Hiking is supposed to be fun, so no need to second guess about having made the right decision. Maybe the toothache is just an omen that the high country hiking season is over for another year. I look forward to your continued hiking adventures. You and your hiking buddies are my inspiration to get out and enjoy the high country for as long as I am able.
Just happy you two are safe and getting the medical attention that you need. You will be back!
So glad you made the right decision with Arrow’s toothache. No need to risk that coming snow storm either. There will be another time. Staying safe is more important than risking so much.
I think you ladies made the right call. You may recall a big October storm that crushed the sierras about 10-15 years ago. I was staying at VVR at the time and we had to pack quickly and drive out over Kaiser Pass before it closed. The only way we made it was by following a huge jacked up pickup truck. I recall that the storm lasted several days and they had late season JMT hikers scattered all over the place. One guy who was kayak camping on Lake Edison was pinned down for three days.
My recommendation is several days in front of a fireplace in Mammoth. Hope you can join us.
Third time’s a charm!! ?
Sorry to hear about Sally’s tooth. The section from Rattlesnake Crossing and Heitz Meadow is pretty messed up. Probably the worst section (condition-wise) of the TST. Lots of downed trees and trail thread very thin to non existent at times. So you gals did a good decision to take a break until you are at 100%. I know logistics & weather make this remaining section complicated to finish in what is left of the season but I have no doubt in my mind that “nevertheless, (sooner or later) you will persist”. 🙂
As the cliche goes–the trail isn’t going anywhere. Stay safe and get healthy!!
You two have all the luck on this trail; or not!
Hope that you’ve been able to get Arrow all better and you can finish up. If not, then happy time at home until your next walk.
Oh, so sorry about Arrow’s tooth! Hopefully she is on the mend now and out of pain.
Ha, guess this means part three awaits. Happy birthday to my Libra sisters.
