Dixie Creek to Cumbres Pass & hitch to Chama – 4 miles
Such goodness today. We popped out onto the highway, stuck our thumbs out, and got the greatest ride with Dave and Kathy in a fun jeep. It was really special to talk to them about the area and their lives. Thank you Dave and Kathy.
We all ate breakfast at The Boxcar Cafe and guess what? Brett Tucker, the creator of the Northern New Mexico Loop walked in. I was so excited to finally meet him.
We are celebrating tonight with a steak dinner at the High Country restaurant and a bit of beverage.
Tomorrow we are riding the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad for fun.
Thank you everyone for following along this journey, for your thoughtful comments, and cheering us on. Thank you to all the people we met along the way and for those that gave us Route and logistics sage advice. You all rock!
Ha. So happy to learn about the NNML from Brett. As serendipitously as you ran into him in Chama, my husband and I ran into him 9 days later in the Wheeler Wilderness area on June 28th. Crossing on the trail just as we broke camp, we shared a few comments about the weather, high winds during the night, and I got to talking with him about his homemade pack. By then, I had learned he left his car in Santa Fe and had been traveling with pack since. I inquired if he blogged and he casually suggested I look up Northern New Mexico loop. And that was that. I have been fascinated with it ever since. Total research junky. I did not know until this very minute, while reading your blog that it was Brett I was talking to. Thanks for the confirmation photo! Thanks also for all the love and enthusiasm you put into your trips. I’ve especially enjoyed your adventures in my home state. It’s pretty harsh at times. Biggest obstacles are wind and downed trees. Keep up the good work and continue sharing your joy.
Nice! Looking forward to your next adventure. 🙂
Looks like you had an excellent trip. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s fun to see others experience my beloved New Mexico.
The last several days have had amazing views and country to walk in. Beautiful. Can’t wait to see you two finish this one later on.
This was an especially beautiful journey, and the joy shows in your faces and your photos.
I really enjoyed the story of your hike. And the photos! Some really beautiful country along the CDT.
What a great ending! I’ve added these areas to my to-do list — must see these beautiful views in person! Thanks so much for the gorgeous photos and look forward to the next report. 🙂
Thanks for the fun trip. Pictures were fantastic and makes me want to head in that direction for a bit of “sight seeing” Waiting for your next adventure!!
I super enjoyed this trip as I am quite familiar with the area. You have shown me new bits and pieces. I can’t wait to get over there and fill in my gaps. How can I contact Brett for the maps and tips?
Congrats, another great journey, just in time for another grand adventure. Keep walkin’ and rockin’!
Loving your posts (as usual!) Stunning photos, fantastic, breathtaking scenery. You make me so envious. Wish I was there with you.
