Day 1 – June 12 – Surprises

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, and leading to the most amazing view.

Hwy 58 to 9.6 miles north of Golden Oak Spring (a drip really)
26.2 miles

Today was great hiking day…and had many surprises!
1. Wildflowers were everywhere-both orange and white Mariposa Lilies blanketed hillsides!!!
2. The weather was perfect
3. Scenery and trail fun and interesting
4. Didn’t know I could hike this far packing 4 liters of water without crying
5. Met my first PCT hiker Tomer from Israel. He had a big backpack and I was flattered when he thought mine weighed 20 #s (FYI it weighs 28 with 5 days of food and 4 liters of water)

Gear and food favs:
-Outdoor Research Bucket Sunhat – What is special about this hat???? Well…the brim has just the right stiffness and width with a chin and cap adjuster that it will stay stable in gale force winds! I like the way it looks also.
-Balance Bars – my favorite flavor is BARE Sweet and Salty Peanut Butter! I hit the trail with one of these in the morning and NEVER get tired of them!

The next few days should be scary. I hope trail Angel Mary restocked water cache at Kelso Valley Road!!!!! Then all is downhill from there. Thank you for all your words of encouragement.

  1. I want to be you when I grow up! I am thrilled to get your blog and will be reading all the entries. What an inspriation!

  2. Enjoying your blog immensely. I’m sure you’ll soon learn that ‘water CACHE’ is the correct spelling. :-))

    • Yep, got that under control. It is amazing what you can misspell on a little keyboard, after a long day hiking, without spell check! Hopefully I have caught some of the mistakes!

After all these weeks of unpredictable weather we have had, heaven was smiling down on you on the first day of your journey. God Bless your feet!!!!!!

  5. Just got home from Lone Pine and I have been thinking of you, of course….out there by yourself….I have a similar message as your mother in law…may the spirit that moves through all things grant you safe passage through the lands that you travel…..I will see you at Walker Pass….you are an inspiration…we are NOT aging gracefully!!!!

  6. When thinking about you today, the 121st Psalm came to mind. Grandma Helen always called this the traveling Psalm. “I lift my eyes up to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip, He who watches over you will not slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you, the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm, He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

  7. You go, girl! Great start.

Christy ! Wow, I loved hearing from you on your first day. The wildflowers must be terrific this year. I’m impressed that your pack only weighs 28 lbs for 5 days. Other than hikers, what wildlife have you seen? Keep your messages coming, as they are so much fun to read!!
