Day 1 – GDT – Getting to the Divide

“Here’s to having fun and miles.” ~Nancy “Why Not?!?!” Huber

July 6

Road access to Bovein Lake to campsite below La Coulotte Ridge – 17 miles

After a couple of days of flying, driving, staying at Leslie and Keith’s in Banff, driving more, dropping off resupply packages, and driving more…we started the trail today.

We could not have done it without hiker friends, Leslie and Keith. Thanks to their hospitality and driving time we are track to hike the GDT.

The Great Divide Trail usually starts at the Montana/Canada border in Waterton Lakes National Park. Because of the large fire last year that devastated the park, the trail has a couple of access points north of the closed area. We choose the Font Creek Trail. We spent most of the day hiking on old Jeep roads with high overgrowth of vegetation.

Celebratory joy was had after actually getting on the GDT. Tomorrow we are perfectly staged to climb one of the most strenuous sections of the trail, La Coulette Ridge. It promises to be wild, open, and epic.

BTW: Be sure to follow Why Not, she blogs at nancyhikes.com

  1. And…..you’re off! Have a blast. Bear country sure is pretty.

  2. Your photo at the airport is supermodel worthy. My daughter would approve!

Re the later photo, I actually thought the bear spray was a bottle of beer. Say hi to Why Not and have a blast in the Great White North!

Looking forward to your hiking the GCT. Love your pictures already. Praying for your safety and protection.

  4. You guys look young and fit, so you must be living right. Kick butt as usual.

  5. So, I’m asking myself, “what’s the big deal with the water bottles?” and then I’m like, that’s bear spray. Ha. Really hope you don’t have to use it. And hope this trail will be hiked from end to end.

    Congrats on being job-free.
