If you would have asked me a year ago if I would be interested in climbing on a rock wall where I had to trust and rely on gear and not just my body strength and skill…I would have said, “You are crazy!”
Well, I am learning as the years go by that, “You are crazy” in my life is more often replaced with, “Yes, how can I make this happen?”
Grant, my son has devoted many hours over last few years to the sports both of rock climbing and high lining in the Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina areas. He is strong, skilled, patient, has a lot of outdoor climbing experience, and a wonderful teacher. Grant offered to bring his climbing gear from Nashville for an upcoming family adventure centered around rock climbing. I couldn’t say no. Joshua Tree was the perfect place.
Joshua Tree National Park in southern California is a world-famous area with thousands of routes. Some climbs are bolted (sport climbing), but there is much more traditional (trad) climbing than sport in the park. The climbing rock is quartz monzonite. If you plan on camping in the park, it is good to make camping reservations. Joshua Tree can get very busy.

Day 1
Dan, Bryn, and I picked up Grant at the Ontario airport. He was loaded down with a number of backpacks, all loaded with climbing gear. Next stop, Joshua Tree. On the way we stopped at Joshua Tree Outfitters, bought 2 harnesses and chalk and headed to Rock Garden Valley for a late afternoon climb.
I cannot even express how overwhelmed I felt. The learning curve in this sport is steep! Lots of heavy equipment, new vocabulary, risk, and using my body in a whole new way. Seriously, it was intense.
After a bit, focus and communication just took over.
Dan and Bryn had climbed at gyms a few times and our family had participated in a beginning climbing day 10 years ago. All of us had lots of class 3 climbing experience. The Smithereens route was a new challenge.
After enjoying a colorful sunset, we drove to Black Rock Campground where we had reservations. The campground had great bathrooms, water, a fire pit, and picnic table.
Day 2
We got an early start to beat the crowds. Headstone Rock is a popular icon located just outside Ryan Campground and way over my ability level. It was pretty amazing to watch my kids on the rock.
Next up, we headed to Hidden Valley Day Use Area to climb Sexy Grandma and Band Saw routes. We then headed to a cooler and easier route, The Eye. I had so much fun on this one. Yes, I said fun, not fear for my life.
There is so much description that I could provide, but honestly it would incorrect vocabulary at this point. I am a new-by. The photos will have to suffice. What I do know, is I certainly learned a ton, loved belaying, and made new goals for myself.
At the end of the day, we stuffed the car full of packs and gear, laughed, and headed home thankful to have yet one more new adventure together.

I remember your incident on the chute on Whitney and yet you are out there rock climbing. You certainly are the “Lady on a Rock”! I’m so impressed and invigorated. You’ve had an amazing start to the year. The best of 2018 to you and your family.

Rock climbing is a whole other world. I am so used to moving through the land with a backpack. Rock climbing you stand at one wall for a few hours with focus. One climb can completely exhaust all your muscles.
