Such goodness today. We popped out onto the highway, stuck our thumbs out, and got the greatest ride with Dave and Kathy in a fun jeep.
Northern New Mexico Loop
Today we finished half of the 500 mile Northern New Mexico Loop at Brazos Over look. Next June, Arrow and I hope to finish the second half coming back to this point and continuing.
Okay…I know I have talked a lot about how green and how many meadows abound in New Mexico, but it is true. At least for this time of year. The sky was bluer and the trees and meadows greener…not to mention heart swelling ridge walking. I have photos to prove it.
Last night was cold, hard cold. Finally, a night to get cozy, zip up the sleeping bag, and hunker down for the night. It is so fine to be in the high mountains.
It was a lovely day.
With an early start from Ghost Ranch and cooler forecasted temps, the day was heaven. As we rose in elevation, the brilliant green forest was lush and thick with intermittent fields of wild iris lined with flickering aspens.
Hummmm. Let’s see. What did happen today?
Shower, eat, laundry, blog, eat, 2 hour nap, organize stuff, eat, shower again, sleep
1st Mission of this day: Drop elevation to the Rio Chama River and climb 1800 feet in elevation up to to the top of Mesa de La Viejos BEFORE noon and the intense hot heat of the afternoon. We not only made our goal but also hiked 10 miles by 10:00 am.
Early morning walk through San Pedro Parks reminded me a bit of Scotland, rolling and green.
After leaving the park we met our first CDT hikers, Will and Anne.
The Northern New Mexico Loop’s tread is trail, unmaintained trail, abandoned forest roads, 4 WD roads, and cross-country. It has about everything to keep the hiker occupied.
Slept in, sipped hot coffee, did some Interneting, took a second shower, organized my gear, and started hiking at 11:00 am.
