It was a great day until the last couple of hours. Relentless gnats hovered over my eyes so I just kept hiking. I had intended on camping at Little Kern Lake, but between the gnats, biting flies, and mosquitos, I just kept going.
Month: August 2017
I headed out for a 3 1/2 day backpack with a map, iPhone, my pack, and a few pages from a favorite guidebook. Requirements … no snow or raging creeks to ford.
Well, we are done. And what a humdinger of a day. Our team kept on the move, we summited Half Dome (the highlight for me), made it to Happy Isle before dark, and celebrated with pizza and salads at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley.
After much struggle, a few of our team members due to exhaustion, fear, blisters, a wedding shower, and knee pain will not be continuing. I admire the strength in hikers that say “no” and know they will be back at it another day. The trail will be there. They are the true heroes.
Grant has saved me on a log crossing and Dan scooped me up after falling in a stream. Not good.
