July 27 – Timberline Lodge

When you find people
who not only tolerate
your quirks but celebrate
them with glad cries of
“Me, too!” be sure to
cherish them. Because
those weirdos are your
tribe.

3 miles above Little Crater Lake to Timberline Lodge – Mount Hood Wilderness
14 miles

Tonight I am writing from a soft bed and pillow at the historical Timberline Lodge.

I was lucky to get a room for a good price that included a shower, laundry, hair dryer, and jacuzzi. Score.

Before leaving Drop n’ Roll this morning, we made plans for her to pick me up at Cascade Locks at the Oregon/Washington border. Family and work calls and that is a great thing. 🙂

I am looking forward to the next little section. When I show photos of the PCT to my students they always love the northern part of Oregon…now I get to experience it first hand.

Being sufficiently clean and well fed, I am ready to hit the dirt again.

  1. Cool stick-photo selfie! And that sunset is absolutely beautiful. You rock!

  2. I’m happy there was space for you at the lodge.

  3. Somehow my “follow” of you disappeared; horrors! But I’m back! I don’t want to miss one step of your adventures!

  4. I like the Hudson’s Bay style curtains….. I have a Hudson’s Bay 4 pt all wool blanket. Super warm, but, heavy. Glad you good weather continues!

  5. some thing I remember in this old brain about teaching…It reminded me of your comments regarding teaching the beauty of mother earth to your students
I am hiking in Banff while trying to get SIRI to be cooperative…She truly hates me !!!
Unless we are willing to encourage our children to reconnect with and appreciate the natural world..We cant expect them to help protect and care for it…..
I think it was David Suzuki…where I read it has long ago disappeared from my mind…::)
The quote reminded me of your love for her ever changing beauty and your ability to share it through your Blogs and You Tube downloads !
Have you ever given thought to heralding a campaign to replant trees in our burned out areas rather than the forest service attitude of allowing mother nature time to reclaim herself
.Nothing is more mentally haunting than walking thru fire ravaged landscape….It reminds so much of the aftermath of war !!

An early congratulations in completing this Section of the PCT and have a safe return to all your loved ones back home.

    • LOKI, Thank you for your insightful and thoughtful words and ideas. War? Yes. Mother Nature in her natural form? Yes. SIRI? I have never tamed her. She is like a very disobedient child to me with a bad attitude. Ha!

I would like to make it up to Banff someday. Cheers to you!

      • As for war ..two successive combat
tours in Vietnam. When I see clear cuts
and fire ravaged land it reminds me of
walking through the aftermath of a battle. The feeling of emptiness, despair and horror..

When I lived in Portland, OR my friends
always told me that I displayed such a passion to explore the mountains and valleys that to this day they continue
to hike and climb . That is what you do
with your videos and journals. People
read them and want to explore and for those who can’t.. they place themselves along your side as you convey your journies . You have a god given talent to convey the beauty of what you see and feel.
        Never change your style …

Good travels to you and your hiking Family..
        Have a wonderful year
and once again Congratulations on a successful completion of Oregon.

  6. how is your foot ??
Congratulations… getting a room in such
short notice is amazing…the trail angels are surely with you.
The Columbia River Gorge will amaze you…a true rain forest. She is one of my
    loves…
Don’t pass by Tunnel Falls if anything
it will be refreshing and much worth
    the detor.
    Good Travels

    • Thank you for your suggestion. Tunnel Falls and the Eagle Creek trail is a must do. Ah the foot. Still hurts from the road walk but doing better. I rubbed it at night, took Ibuprofen, soaked it in cold creeks, and most important…stretched a lot.

  7. Did you make it to the Wedding on Mt Hood yesterday? Is the room a hiker dorm room at the Lodge? staff lodging?

    • I missed the wedding by just a few hours I found out on Facebook afterwards. Crazy? Just a few hours.

The room has eight beds that can be split between hikers. It has 2 shared bathrooms. I was by myself and didn’t see hikers, so they gave me a great deal for the whole room. Another crazy.

Somehow I missed the whole wedding party on the trail also.
