July 20 – Into the Winds

The only people for me are the mad ones; mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time. The ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars
– Jack Kerouac, “On The Road”

Highway 28 at South Pass to Sweetwater Campground
20.2 miles

Lander was a great recharge. I spent the majority of my time hanging out at the Holiday Lodge and The Gannett Grill and was very content.

Over the last couple of weeks Stryder’s blisters from his new shoes have become beyond painful. His description of the experience was this, “There is probably nothing I could say that would be G-rated.” Photos of his blisters being popped have been featured periodically in blog posts. Luckily, Stryder was able to acquire a new pair of Skechers Shape-Ups in Lander. They are super cushy and he has great hopes they will work well on the trail. He is also hoping to tone up his calves and rear. Haha.

We got a ride 36 miles back to the trail. Our group now refer to hitch-hiking as being a “Positive Roadside Influence”. I have found a successful technique to hitch is to first stick my thumb out, then wave enthusiastically, and finally motion for the cars to actually pull to the side of the road. It seems to be working. Ben pulled over and cheerfully gave us all a ride in the back of his truck.

Today was just the best. I have found that an experience like that of walking through the Great Basin can make one thankful for the even the smallest things.

I am really looking forward to walking through The Wind River Mountain Range during the next few days. The Winds are known for beauty, remote wilderness, and bear. I have always heard amazing things about this mountain range, but have yet to have the opportunity to explore them. We are planning to take the “Cirque of the Towers” scenic route and we are all very excited for it.
